In a trend being coined the Great Resignation, the pandemic has created an employee exit that has continued as people are quitting their jobs at a rate of 3.9 % since June according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meanwhile, job openings rose by 590,000 to a new high of 10.1 million positions. Hence, the BIG QUIT of 2021 is causing the power to shift to the side of labor as employers are now scrambling over an available pool of workers in no hurry to return to their old jobs or are already looking for something better.
A labor shortage does exist in the US and did before the pandemic with a shortage in construction workers. The arrival of COVID only made it worse. These hiring challenges are not limited to the construction industry and it seems like employees are in charge now!
What can employers to do now to shift their strategies from losing more employees to keeping them?
